Comprehensive new features for DMR radios

Continuous improvement and continuous development: Hytera has set itself the goal of bringing its DMR portfolio further forward with every software release. The latest update, which is available for all DMR radios and DMR repeaters that support DMR Tier II (conventional DMR) and DMR Tier III (trunking) radio, is further proof of this.

Update Highlights for Radios

  • Optimized energy saving: If the repeater receives a good signal, the transmission power of handheld radios is automatically reduced, thus extending the battery life.
  • Surprisingly no coverage anymore? Not with the new software update! Now DMR radios can alert as soon as the area of the radio coverage is left.
  • New GPS protocol for more situational awareness: A new, optimized GPS protocol ensures a smaller volume of data to be transmitted for provisioning of position data. This means that the positions of even more radios can be monitored with just one time slot.
  • Voice buffer: If the call is started too quickly after pressing the PTT button, call fragments are no longer lost.

Update Highlights for Repeaters and Radio Systems

  • Simple selecting of the operating mode: Now the operating mode of DMR radios can simply be selected with the channel selector knob. A change between DMR trunking, Hytera XPT and conventional DMR radio is thus possible without restarting the device.
  • More networking options: Conventional DMR Tier II repeaters can now be networked with Hytera XPT base stations.

New features for DMR radios

Communication with "Wireless Link"

Mobile radios and repeaters can be connected using a UART cable to provide a "wireless link" for transmitting digital services (voice, data or signalling). This feature is applicable to scenarios where IP Multi-Site-Connect is not available due to Internet connection limitations and the repeaters are wirelessly connected to extend communication coverage.

Mixed reception on digital channels

With this feature, DMR radios can receive and answer analog calls on the digital channel. No manual change of the operating mode is necessary. (not for PD5 series)

Communication via the accessory port (MD785i)

Users of the new DMR vehicle radio MD785i can access the option board via the CPS programming software to transfer data to external devices.

Simple identification via QR code

With a QR code, users can quickly identify their radio device. For example, the user can import the serial number or self-defined information via CPS. This information can then be displayed on the radio's display via the radio menu.

New, optimized GPS protocol

In order to speed up the positioning of radios, the transmission of GPS position information by radios has been greatly improved. This means that much more GPS information can now be sent to the control center via a time slot than before, if only position data is required.

Fixed Channel Tx Contact

If this feature is activated, the radio can only call preset Tx contacts. The following functions will then be disabled:

  • All-Call-Talkback in Private Mode, Alert Call Talkback, Manual Dialing, the activation option in the default numeric key selection, the digital option in the Call Mode column of the One-Touch menu, and
  • the manual selection option in the menu / feature list in the one-touch menu.

Improvements for DMR radios


In earlier versions only two mobile phones can be connected back-to-back. In this version, the vehicle radio can also be connected to the repeater. The back-to-back function is used to implement communication between analogue and digital radios.

Seamless switching of operating modes

  • Seamless switching: No need to restart the radio when switching between conventional DMR radio and DMR trunked radio.
  • Switching via channel selector knob: The user can switch between conventional DMR radio, Hytera XPT radio and DMR trunked radio using the channel selector knob.

Storing GPS data

Radios can store GPS data on MicroSD memory cards for later analysis. The radio stores this GPS data in .dat format for a maximum of 30 days. The GPS data can be read with the help of the dispatcher solution SmartDispatch.

Optimized alarm tones

  • New alarm tone for "Out of Radio coverage" warning has been added for conventional DMR radio (repeater mode) and XPT mode.
  • The call alarm cycles can now be set from 1 to 10 or to "infinite".
  • The duration of the tones for "busy channel" and "call setup failed" has been extended. These tones are output until the user releases the PTT key.

Local emergency siren

Will be added to the digital emergency (the digital emergency system will be increased from 64 to 255 in this version).

Clarity Transmission (multiple data packets)

The maximum transmission unit for Clarity Transmission is 512 bytes. If the data is between 512 bytes and 1.5 K, it is divided into several packets before transmission. If more than 1.5 K, the excess data is discarded.

Voice buffer

Prevents loss of voice data during connection setup. When the user presses PTT, the radio immediately activates the microphone and stores the voice in the buffer. After the call is established, the radio transmits the voice according to the memory order.

Warning when leaving the radio coverage

The radio will display "Out Of Range" if it is outside the range of the repeater (no reception of the beacon signal from the repeater within the beacon interval).

Smart Battery Software Upgrade

DMR accessory upgrade tool for updating the battery software. This tool is used when the battery is inserted in the radio and the radio is connected to a PC.

Bluetooth MIC

The Bluetooth microphone of the handheld radio can be activated or deactivated via the MIC&SPK menu.

Caller location

Even a radio without a positioning chipset can display the received latitude and longitude during a call.

All-call vibration

The All Call is a special group call. If group call vibration is enabled, the radio will now also vibrate when it receives an All Call. The vibration duration (100~25000 ms), the vibration interval (100~25000 ms) and the vibration cycles (1~255) of all calls are the same as for the group call.

New features and improvements for DMR repeaters

Wireless link communication

Wireless Link Communication is a solution based on the UART port. With this function, the repeater connects to the radio to establish a wireless connection for digital service transmission.

Mixed Systems

The Fusion System feature is used to implement communication between different types of DMR-based radio systems, such as an IP Multisite Connect system and an XPT system. When this function is enabled, the repeater assigns group calls or private calls according to the system ID mapping table and then sends the system ID to a repeater in the other system. This repeater decodes the system ID into a local number.

Frequency Division Duplex (FDD)

In this version, the radio supports full duplex calls in repeater mode.

The full duplex call occupies two time slots of the repeater. For example, radio 1 initiates a call on time slot 1. After the call is established, radio 1 transmits voice on time slot 2 of the repeater and receives voice on time slot 1 of the repeater. The radio 2 transmits speech on time slot 1 of the repeater and receives speech on time slot 2 of the repeater.

A SIP telephone system can use the repeater to implement communication between radio and telephone. Telephones operate in full duplex mode. If the radio also supports full duplex calls, it can communicate with the telephone via the repeater. The radio transmits speech to the phone on one time slot of the repeater while receiving speech from the phone on the other time slot.

Currently, the repeater supports full duplex calls between radios or radios and phones at one location (conventional), an IP multi-site connection system, and an XPT system. However, a full duplex call between the radio and the repeater itself or between the radio and third-party software is not supported.

Rental function

For the repeaters a function for rental has been added.

Primary Bootloader and Secondary Bootloader (nur für RD1065)

To avoid an upgrade failure, the boot process is split into primary boot loaders and secondary boot loaders.

  • The primary boot loader is used to store the original or basic functions and keep them unchanged.
  • The secondary boot loader is used to add and store new functions. This boot loader is updated with the device.

Number of channels per zone

The number of channels per zone is expanded to 64 channels in each zone for RD985, RD985S and RD1065.

IP for third-party replacement server (or reserve server)

When this function is enabled, the repeater automatically connects to the backup dispatch station if the primary dispatch station does not function properly.

New and improved functions for applications

Programming via the air interface (OTAP)

With this software version, DMR Tier II repeaters (conventional DMR radio) can be programmed via the air interface (Over the Air Programing, OTAP).

XNMS enhanced

The following features have been added or enhanced in XNMS:

  • Added supervisor for user or feature management.
  • Optimized topology and added repeater position.
  • Added displays of basic information, monitoring data and parameters of the selected repeater in the topology.
  • Optimized data service and database.
  • Access code added to ensure security.
  • Added more parameters from RDAC (Repeater Diagnostic and Control) to XNMS.
  • Optimized report export
